Paul "Pete"
Skaggs
May 9, 1953 — Jul 14, 2026
With hearts full of love and gratitude for a life well lived, the family of Paul Skaggs Jr., lovingly known as "Pete," announces that he went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday evening, July 14, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Pete was born on May 9, 1953, in Granite City, Illinois, to the late Paul E. Skaggs and Violet M. (Coffman) Skaggs. He graduated from Potosi High School with the Class of 1971, where he formed lifelong friendships and developed the values of hard work, kindness, and dedication that would define his life.
On April 5, 1975, Pete married the love of his life, Donita Barton, at Potosi Southern Baptist Church in a ceremony officiated by Rev. Lee Miller. Their marriage was a beautiful testament to enduring love, faith, and commitment, spanning more than five decades together.
A man of unwavering faith, Pete was a member of White Oak Grove Baptist Church. He loved the Lord wholeheartedly and lived his life with quiet humility, integrity, and compassion. His faith was reflected not only in his words but in the way he loved and cared for those around him.
Pete found joy in life's simple pleasures. Whether he was casting a fishing line, creating beautiful woodworking projects with his hands, or meticulously caring for his lawn, he took pride in everything he did. His beautifully manicured yard became a reflection of the care, patience, and attention he gave to every aspect of his life.
Above all else, Pete cherished his family. Nothing brought him greater happiness than spending time with those he loved. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Donita Skaggs; his son, Bradley Skaggs; his daughter, Jan Boyster; his beloved grandchildren, Garrett Valle and his wife, Haylie, and Gracie Boyster. One of Pete's greatest joys in his final days was eagerly anticipating the arrival of his precious great-granddaughter, Paisley Rose, whose life will forever carry the love and legacy of the great-grandfather who was already so excited to meet her.
Pete is also lovingly remembered by his brother, Don Skaggs and his wife, Rosemary; his sister, Rita Owens; special family member, Tom Boyster; along with many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, dear friends, and his church family.
He was welcomed into Heaven by those who preceded him in death: his parents, Paul E. and Violet M. Skaggs; his sisters, Patricia Politte and Jane Perigen; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Donnie and Dorothy Barton; his sister-in-law, Betty Chazelle; and his beloved nephew, Brian Skaggs.
Though his family grieves the loss of his earthly presence, they rejoice in knowing Pete is now at peace in the presence of his Savior. His legacy of faith, humility, hard work, and unconditional love will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His gentle smile, kind heart, and steadfast devotion to God and family will never be forgotten.
In accordance with Pete's wishes, a private graveside service was held at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Potosi. Funeral arrangements were respectfully entrusted to the care and direction of DeClue Funeral Home.
