Obituary

Leonard Rufus Stables, a beloved father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at the age of 86.

Leonard was born on March 10, 1940, in Giles County, Virginia, a son of the late Otis Grover Stables and Lelia Kathleen (Riddle) Stables.

A graduate of Narrows High School, Class of 1959, Leonard spent his childhood growing up in Wolf Creek, Virginia. As a young man, one of his first jobs was manually setting bowling pins at a local bowling alley, a memory that reflected the simpler days of his youth. Throughout his life, Leonard worked at Cominco Mines and Doe Run Mines, where he dedicated many years. In 1963, he enlisted in the United States Army, faithfully serving his country for six years before returning home to continue building a life centered around his family and career.

On September 4, 1965, Leonard was united in marriage to the love of his life, Lucille Wilkerson. They were blessed with 50 years of marriage, and built a wonderful life together.

Leonard found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved spending time outdoors hunting and fishing and could often be found dancing whenever the opportunity arose. He also enjoyed playing poker, shooting pool, and buying and trading cars. While he had many hobbies and interests, nothing brought him greater happiness than spending time with his family. They were the center of his world, and he treasured every moment shared with them.

Those who remain to cherish Leonard's memory include his son, Joe Stables and wife, Staci; his daughter, Julie Stables; three grandchildren, Brandon Stables, Nichole Stables, and Baylie Thompson and husband, Beau; four great-grandchildren, Bryce Jenkins, Briar Thompson, Hoyt Thompson, and Truett Thompson; his sister, Freda Duncan; sister-in-law, Daisy Wilkerson; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

In addition to his parents, Leonard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lucille Stables, and other dear relatives.
