Doris Mae Boyer, a beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at the age of 93. Born on December 27, 1930, in Salem, Illinois, Doris was the daughter of Roscoe Sweet and Ella Ethel (White) Sweet. Doris developed a strong work ethic at a very young age when she began babysitting and picking blackberries, where her hard work earned her a place in the hearts of those who enjoyed her sweet contributions to homemade pies.
Doris's life was forever changed when she met the love of her life, Alvin Boyer, at a revival service led by his father, Richard Boyer. Their bond blossomed into a beautiful marriage on October 6, 1950, in Arkansas. Together, they forged a partnership filled with love, laughter, and family, navigating through life’s challenges with unwavering support for one another. Alvin and Doris shared 67 years together.
Though Doris's formal education ended after attending Salem School until the 8th grade, her remarkable intellect and abundant knowledge served her well throughout her life. She became a proud mother to her three children: Tony, Beverly, and Connie, and later delighted in her role as a grandmother to Cody. Doris took immense pride in Cody and especially valued his military career, celebrating his achievements as a testament to the values she instilled in her family.
Doris's passions extended beyond her family. She treasured time spent fishing, particularly on trips to Michigan where she pursued the thrill of salmon fishing. She also found joy in mushroom hunting, crafting, playing bingo, and attending events at the Sayers Senior Center. Her vibrant spirit remained strong, even in her later years, reflecting a life lived with fervor and creativity. Above all, Doris loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was a member of Harvest Christian Centre where she brought much joy to those around her. She will be remembered for the time she spent reading God's word and praying.
She is survived by her devoted daughter Connie Phelps; beloved grandson Cody Phelps and his wife Brittney; sisters-in-law Shirley Sweet and Sue Bush; brother-in-law Bill Underwood; special nephew Tom Sweet; special niece Sandy Wilkins and her husband Mike; and close family friend Dick Marshall. Doris also held a special place in her heart for her cousin Ed White and his wife Bekki, viewing him as a bonus son. Doris also leaves behind many additional nieces, nephews, and a loving church family.
In addition to Doris' parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Alvin Boyer; daughter Beverly Sue Schrader; son Tony Allen Boyer; son-in-law Braden Schrader; and her siblings: John Sweet, Roxie Kuder, Vivian Weiland, and Jim Sweet.
To honor Doris's life and legacy, visitation will take place at DeClue Funeral Home on Sunday, December 1, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and again on Monday, December 2 at Harvest Christian Centre in Park Hills, Missouri from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service beginning at 1:00 PM. A separate visitation will be held Tuesday, December 3, 2024 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM at Elm Street Baptist Church in Murphysboro, Illinois. Interment will follow the visitation on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at the East Lawn Cemetery in Salem, Illinois.
Doris leaves behind a legacy filled with love, laughter, and a willingness to nurture those around her. She will be remembered fondly and her spirit will forever shine brightly in the hearts of her family and friends.
