Billy Merle Gibson went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, September 25, 2025, having reached the age of 94. He was born on July 20, 1931 to the late George Washington “Wash” Gibson and the late Mary Alice (Harvey) Gibson.
From 1951 until 1955, Billy proudly served in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Donner (LSD-20). On December 7, 1952, Billy married the love of his life, Leona Maxine Minx, in Shirley, Missouri. They shared 72 wonderful years of marriage and were blessed with two daughters.
Billy's deep and abiding faith was a guiding light throughout his life. He was a devoted member of several churches in the communities he called home. He began his journey of faith at White Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Shirley, Missouri. In 1974, he and Leona moved to Viburnum and joined First Baptist Church. Later, in 2007, they became members of Temple Baptist Church in Sullivan. Finally, after relocating to Ozark in 2013, they joined Hopedale Baptist Church, where Billy remained an active and faithful member until his passing.
Billy was a 32nd Degree Mason and a proud member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. His love for gospel music was evident in his life. He sang lead in a gospel quartet alongside his wife, brother, and nephew. He was also a talented musician and played multiple instruments. At church, he occasionally played his guitar with his granddaughter on bass guitar and his daughter on piano. He also performed in a country music band, playing both acoustic guitar and upright bass.
Professionally, Billy worked as an Electrical Foreman at St. Joe Minerals Corporation, later known as The Doe Run Company. Outside of work, he loved spending time with his family and attending gospel concerts. He was known for his generosity and many hobbies, including woodworking, stock car racing, water skiing, motorcycling, golfing and fishing. His craftsmanship was exceptional, and he freely shared his handmade furniture and woodwork with loved ones and churches. Notably, he helped build the Multipurpose Building at the First Baptist Church in Viburnum—a lasting testament to his dedication and love for his church family.
In addition to his parents, Billy was proceeded in death by his loving wife, Leona, his five older brothers: John Gibson, Fred (Gladys) Gibson, Eld. Clarence (Hilda) Gibson, Eld. Ralph (Chloe) Gibson and Boyd (Ruth) Gibson; and his four older sisters: Myrtle (James) Hawkins, Edith Gibson, Ethel (Louis) Yost and Esther Gibson.
Those who remain to mourn his passing are his two daughters: Marcia (Terry) Harris and Mary (Philip) LaRue; his four grandchildren: Terra (Eric) Morris, Adam (Rachel) Harris, Clay (Tricia) LaRue and Kristie LaRue; and his six great-grandchildren: Gavin and Lexi Morris, Graham and Cole Harris, and Lane and Leighton LaRue. He leaves behind a host of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by many.
